Part 3: Muddling the Desk
I finally bought my domain. What next? Time to move on designing this website. Hell yes, this is another headache. As you can see, there are thousands of interesting design that I preferred but to merge them altogether into a single piece is like pouring 100gal. of oil into a cup. Yup! It's a never ending process. No matter how hard I tried, things getting wrong somehow. A lesson to me--don't get myself overwhelmed with the design. It will cause you headache! Silly me...
Why don't I use WordPress? It has great templates and features. Hold on a minute. WordPress? Yes, I notice lots of blogs were using WordPress. Some even used Joomla. I find it interesting too. Honestly, I don't have the skill to tweak the codes. It would be less hassle in modifying the design but when it comes to scripts, I surrender. I'm lacking of expertise. I've tried myself once but still I cannot catch it. It requires lots of reading and to be honest, I don't have much time to spend.
So here I am again. Getting piles of papers and start sketching the layout (and I installed Dreamweaver too!). I don't want this website become scattered or difficult to explore. Everything must be organized accordingly. Everything must be neatly visualized. After tweaking here and there, there you go. A simple design as I want it to be. Oh, if you don't have restriction on the budget, just hire a web designer/freelancer. It will make your life easier. Me, I like to build it myself but when in the need of script installations, I may hire them as well. :)
Be able to design your own website gives you great satisfaction. Not that I totally satisfied with this website but for the time being, this is more than enough. Somehow, my website is classified as "Vanity Site". Thus, it doesn't need to be created so professionally. Unless I plan to build a "Marketing Site", then that's another story. Think carefully before cramping the features into your website. It may look interesting but you are risking the website load speed. This is not my field thus I can't provide any professional advice. These tips from Dreamweaver may help you in designing your website. My tips for you: "Make sure your site provides a consistent look for your user."
I am using nested tables since this website is not too big. Many experts believe nested table should be avoided as it takes a lot longer for the browser to work out the spacing before it displays on your screen. Hmm...That's fine for me. For the time being, my site loads quite fast. Don't believe me? Test mine here. Perhaps I'll hire an expert to rewrite this website into a pure CSS--later. For now, all I need is getting my html validated. Time to check. Hmm.. got one error due to comment script. Well, there's nothing I can do about it since getting the script to work is far more important than getting it validated. Am I right? Anyway, if you wish to check yours, make a visit to W3C HTML Validation Service. It's free to use!
How about a logo then? Nah...I'm not into business. Why do I need one? Perhaps later when I have the mood. I better start finding the hosting. That's more important than a mere logo. Notice the favicon in your browser bar? I'll explain later in my upcoming chapter.
