Part 8: A Death Note From the Landlord
In my previous journey "In Search Of Shelter", I decided to hooked up with icore.com.my a.k.a icorehosting.com. In fact, I recommended them but alas, things will never appear nice as always. Here goes the story.
I always test my website for error. Be it comment form, contact form, links, folder, .htaccess etc. Out of nowhere, I found out some error with my comment form. The error message seems related to php configuration. Here's the sample error:
"Warning: mail() has been disabled for security reasons in /my_affected_directory/myfile.php on line xxx"
Hmm... Maybe something's wrong with my file. So I checked the file using an editor, look for missing codes whatsoever. Nope! Everything just fine. Then I performed another test with the mailing form. Let see how it goes. Kaching!!
To my surprise, the similar error occurred. What now... It must be something to do with php mail function. Now I'm getting pissed. I paid them the whole year and this is the best they can serve me? Wait...Wait...Cool down a bit. I contacted icore, explaining what happened. And here's the reply:
"Hi, we disable php sendmail function, it have a some server security problem and use spamming problem
you may try pear smtp also
thanks."
...and this;
" ok, but we really have to disable php mail() function, our ip always get block by yahoo mail server.
you can try phpmailer more simple then pear mail at http://a-link-is-given".
...and this;
"> Hi, i cannot enable the mail() function, it really a lot of spam mail sending true by mail form
we only allow use smtp to send mail.".
Now you understand why I'm so pissed? I paid for the service; not to guide me on how to overcome this error. My payment was on the basis that I can use php mail function. I don't know why their IPs are on Yahoo! block list. I need them to rectify these errors; not some 'go-to-nowhere' guides.
You see. This is not kind of technical supports you are expecting from your host. Their answer is pretty lame. Disabling functions are not solutions. The answer to security is not to turn stuff off. That's not fixing or fighting, it's quitting and dying
Geesh...This is getting tiresome. I contacted several senior webmasters, explaining what heappened. Their suggestion? Find a new host. Well, I think that's all I can do for now. Time to ask for refund then... (Thanks Mike for the help)
After few sessions, I finally got the refund. It was very straight forward, minutes after both parties agreed on the amount. Hat's off to the host for that. Since everything worked just fine, there's nothing more to tell. Actually, I love their server. It's extremely fast compared to the rest.
It's shopping spree again!
