Getting the Malays Back On Track

Malaysia electionsNowadays, more and more people discussed pertinent issues on Malay or to be specific, 'Malay Supremacy' (Ketuanan Melayu). Yes, a racialist belief first embarked by United Nation Malay Organization (UMNO) during Malay sovereignty threats. I’m not good at numbers (hey, a Contract Executive says that?) but if my memory recalls correctly, it’s somewhere within early 2000.

This ideology, first remarked in 1940’s and later in 1960’s when the Malays felt threaten by other races, particularly Chinese who demanded equal rights. Yes, Malays are sensitive when it comes to supremacy. We’ve seen this since 1500’s where every traders need to have Sultan’s permission before commencing any business in Tanah Melayu.

So, what is this all about? I’m Malay but I insist to know why we need Ketuanan Melayu? Does it mean Malays must be the de-facto of Malaysian politics?

Actually, I don’t have anything against it. In fact, I still eager to see that Malays dominate Malaysia’s hierarchy. But UMNO cannot declare as they are the one practicing Ketuanan Melayu while other parties aren’t. Let me put it this way. UMNO managed to secure their power with the help of its component parties--in which most of them are Chinese and Indian based.

How can you remain supreme if not because the supports from other races? PAS is more sensible since most of the supporters and members are Malays. Man, Ketuanan Melayu is not fighting for Malays’ rights and privileges; while at the same time, whacking PAS and Keadilan. To me, it’s more into abandoning it.

I support Ketuanan Melayu as much I am proud of being civilized Malay. However, I am the one who oppose it if this ideology mainly to secure someone’s seat. I always dream to see the Malays remain supreme--at least to my next generation…with the Malays behind it.

Get the Malays form the line and we shall see ‘Ketuanan Melayu’ shines again.
